Benzalkonium chloride
The text below is about the active substance benzalkonium chloride.
mechanism of action
- Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium that has been used for many years as a surfactant and antiseptic / disinfectant. It is known for its bactericidal properties at low concentrations (usually between 0.1 and 0.2%) on a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
- this Drug eliminates (5 log decrease) Staphylococcus aureus and beta-hemolytic streptococci (eg Streptococcus pyogenes ) in 1 minute, as well as Pseudomonas aeruginosa in 5 minutes.
- also has spermicidal activity. The active substance causes the membrane of the sperm to rupture. Physiologically, the destruction of the sperm occurs in two stages: first destruction of the flagellum, then bursting of the head. There is no modification of the saprophytic flora: the Döderlein bacillus is respected.
